Our Arts Story: New Year’s in the Arts

With the new year right around the corner, it’s the perfect time for goal setting. A new year can symbolize a fresh start and give you the energy to take on new things. Whether you’re an experienced artist to an aspiring beginner, we all should nurture our inner creativity in 2023.

1. Start the Project You Keep Avoiding.

While starting a new project can be intimidating, break it down into small, manageable pieces. Start with working once a week, and before you know it, you’ll be making progress!

2. Make time to create

Art is a creative outlet for expression, which helps us relax and unwind. Schedule some time out of your week to focus on your art. It can be as simple as grabbing your sketchbook while you’re watching TV or singing in the car on the way to work. Unplugging even for 10 minutes can change your whole day around.

3. Attend a Class

A great way to stay motivated is to take a class with a professional. Learning new methods or techniques will help get the creative juices flowing and inspire you to try something new. There are tons of classes and workshops available, from pottery to comedy improv, all across Guilford County.

4. Connect with the Creative Community

As you begin to spend more time with your art, it’s important to meet up with other people with similar interests. Talking with another artist can spark ideas for new projects and give you valuable feedback on current projects. This can be as simple as hanging around the Greensboro Cultural Center or finding a local Facebook group. Creative collaboration is key to growing as an artist.

5. Take a chance

This year is the time to stop doubting yourself as an artist. Instead of talking yourself out of opportunities, push yourself to keep going. Apply for that grant! Submit your piece to a gallery! Audition for that group! You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try.
