ArtsGreensboro Says Goodbye to Board Members
Rebecca Buffington started as a liaison to the ArtsGreensboro board as a member of the Guilford County’s Board of Education. After retiring from her position with the Board of Education, Rebecca joined the ArtsGreensboro board of directors as a full voting member. In her seven years with ArtsGreensboro, she has chaired numerous committees and worked with schools to facilitate teacher art grants.
Reflecting on her time on the board, Rebecca recalls being most proud of the equity work. The DeVos Institute’s Diversity in the Arts endeavor allowed ArtsGreensboro and hundreds of other people and arts organizations to focus on equity training and investigate challenges facing arts organizations of color. Using data from the study, ArtsGreensboro’s board engaged in a transitional period of reframing the organization’s decisions and budget priorities to reflect a more diverse and inclusive grant and funding process. She is proud that everyone on the board is so involved and collaborative.
Rebecca recognizes that while many support the arts, particularly nonprofit organizations like ArtsGreensboro, not everyone has the time or resources to be involved and do the work. She states: “I try to be mindful of all the people who wish they were doing that work because they know how important it is, but for whatever restriction they can’t.” Rebecca emphasizes the privilege of being a part of a nonprofit board and the invaluable insight it has brought her. “The nonprofit world is a journey of grace, understanding people’s challenges and their craft. That is just priceless.” Rebecca is stepping down from her current position but will continue to serve the board. ArtsGreensboro is incredibly grateful for Rebecca’s work and is excited to continue seeing her work and impact in the future.
In addition to Rebecca stepping down, we want to recognize two other hardworking board members who have reached the end of their terms. Michael Sherill, president of M. G. Newell, has served on the board for over five years and led the marketing committee. Nancy Radtke, a realtor with Allen Tate Realtors, chaired the development committee and served as secretary for the board. We are honored to have worked with such phenomenal people and wish them well as they transition away from ArtsGreensboro.
