One of the first things you see when you enter the Greensboro Cultural Center is the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art. When you enter the gallery’s front doors, you’re welcomed by a smiling face in the GreenHill shop. Ornate, handcrafted vases and jewelry line the shelves, leading you to the main gallery. Inside the main gallery, you see the current exhibition on display. The art is a beautiful, eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces, all done by local North Carolina artists. Beyond the gallery is the art studio where students are busy learning in a hands-on artmaking session. This is the GreenHill experience.
GreenHill engages a broad community of artists, adults, and children through dynamic exhibitions and educational programs while providing a platform for exploration and investment in art. GreenHill is the only non-collecting organization dedicated to presenting, promoting, and advocating contemporary visual art and artists of North Carolina.
On October 7, 1974, Green Hill Art Gallery was incorporated as a gallery space for professional artists with a statewide mission of supporting NC artists. After finding its first home at the Sternberger House on Summit Avenue, GreenHill moved three times: first, to the old News and Record building (i.e., Greensboro Cultural Center), then, while it was being renovated, to 327 South Elm Street, and finally back to its current home, the Greensboro Cultural Center at 200 North Davie Street. GreenHill has served over a million visitors, exhibited almost 10,000 artists, traveled shows, brought in outside curators, provided artists the opportunity to have important retrospectives, shown comprehensive surveys of mediums and genres, and started an award-winning studio program. GreenHill has become an essential part of the arts sector across Greensboro and North Carolina.
This Winter, join GreenHill for its Collector’s Choice Gala on December 3, 2022. After a two-year hiatus, GreenHill is excited to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to meet the makers and experience Winter Show before it opens to the public. All works in the exhibition are offered for sale, and patrons can encounter works by talented artists at all stages of their careers.
“Collector’s Choice is an event serving as a showcase for a rich gathering of artists and allows the public and collectors to discover the newest wave of NC artists,” says GreenHill’s curator, Edie Carpenter. The show highlights over 60 NC artists and works in contemporary art, fiber, fine crafts, and more. This year’s gala features two new artists, Brianna Dowd and Karina Graves. Dowd is an emerging artist with ties to the Greensboro area. Her works in Winter Show tell the story of cultural knowledge passed on across generations through black-and-white photos of a grandmother and her grandchild. Graves is an emerging artist currently studying at East Carolina University. Graves creates fiber art that showcases themes of family.
