Teachers from 17 schools in Guilford County receive funds for projects that promote the arts in education
Greensboro, N.C., December 15, 2014 — ArtsGreensboro announced today the recipients of its 2014– 2015 Teacher Art Grants.
The Teacher Art Grant program awards grants to emphasize arts projects and programs in all school subject areas; support the teaching of the NC Arts Curriculum; bring artists into the classroom; reach large numbers of students; and encourage cooperative arts projects among schools, teachers, PTAs and other organizations.
This year’s program awarded grants to teachers for arts projects in public, charter and private schools serving Greater Greensboro-area students in grades K – 12. Awards range from a few hundred dollars to $1,500. The total funded amount is $14,604.
The grant recipients and their projects include:
- Jennifer Dufort, Sedelia Elementary, for a Japanese fish printing unit
- Mary Young, Erwin Montessori & Madison Elementary, for a project introducing students to Rosa Parks through installations, artist visits, and workshops
- Meg Anderson, Gillespie Park Elementary, for a world drumming unit using tubano drums
- Stephanie Allen & Linda Veneris, Western Guilford High School, for Shakespeare workshops with classically trained Shakespearean actors
- Jan Armstrong, Jefferson Elementary, for a narrative collage project
- Sheri Summerell, Hampton Elementary, for an integrated arts program called, “Drumming Up World Music”
- Susan Benson, David D. Jones Elementary, for a project entitled, “Arts from the Heart”
- Courtnee Hummel, Oak Ridge Military Academy, for a digital photography workshop
- Amy Younts, Doris Henderson Newcomers, for a live production of NC Theatre for Young People’s Pinocchio
- Karen Hornfeck, Our Lady of Grace School, for a unit on the history of North Carolina pottery
- Jancie Reinbold, Western Guilford High School, for the purchase of four keyboards and the extension of piano lab hours
- Beverly Clary, Lindley Elementary, for a North Carolina lighthouses clay-model unit
- Jeannine DuMond, Northern Elementary, for the purchase of contra bass bars
- Shannon Myers, Dudley High School, for unit on Alexander Calder mobiles
- Elizabeth Welch, Caldwell Academy, for a mural project
- Paula Ritter-Lipscomb, Early Middle College at GTCC, for a program entitled, “Change Awakens – New Beginnings”
